- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or wax.
- Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler.
- Core the apples and cut them into thin slices, about 1/4-inch thick.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until well coated.
- In another bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, melted butter, and chopped nuts. Add raisins if using.
- Mix until the oats are evenly coated and the mixture is crumbly but holds together when pressed.
- Grease the slow cooker insert with butter or cooking spray.
- Layer the apple mixture evenly at the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Sprinkle the oat topping mixture over the apples, breaking up any large clumps.
- Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 4 to 6 hours. Check around the 4-hour mark.
- During the last hour, remove the lid to allow moisture to evaporate for a thicker consistency.
- Once the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown, its ready to serve.
- Scoop portions into bowls and serve warm or at room temperature.
- Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, and drizzle with caramel sauce or sprinkle extra nuts if desired.
- Let the dessert cool completely before transferring to an airtight container.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- For breakfast, serve over yogurt or with a splash of milk.
