Description
A classic and comforting Irish Coffee featuring Irish whiskey, brown sugar, strong coffee, and a layer of lightly whipped cream. Perfect for a cozy night in or a special occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (such as Jameson or Tullamore D.E.W.)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (packed)
- 4 ounces hot brewed coffee (strong and dark roast recommended)
- 2 ounces heavy cream (lightly whipped)
- Optional: Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg or chocolate shavings for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the glass: Fill a stemmed Irish coffee glass or heat-resistant mug with hot water from your tap. Let it sit for a minute or two to warm the glass. Empty the glass completely.
- Add the brown sugar: Place the packed tablespoon of brown sugar into the preheated glass.
- Pour in the Irish whiskey: Add the 1 1/2 ounces of Irish whiskey to the glass.
- Dissolve the sugar: Stir the whiskey and brown sugar together vigorously until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add the hot coffee: Slowly pour in the 4 ounces of hot brewed coffee.
- Stir gently: Give the coffee, whiskey, and sugar mixture a gentle stir to combine everything evenly.
- Chill the cream: Make sure your heavy cream is well-chilled.
- Lightly whip the cream: Whip the heavy cream using a whisk, hand mixer, or immersion blender until it thickens and forms soft peaks. Do not add sugar.
- Hold a spoon upside down: Hold a spoon upside down, just above the surface of the coffee. The back of the spoon should be touching the coffee.
- Pour the cream slowly: Slowly pour the lightly whipped cream over the back of the spoon. The cream will gently flow over the spoon and float on top of the coffee, creating a distinct layer.
- Garnish (Optional): If desired, grate a small amount of fresh nutmeg or sprinkle chocolate shavings over the top of the cream.
- Serve and Enjoy: Drink the Irish Coffee through the cream without stirring. Enjoy immediately.
Notes
- Use a good quality Irish whiskey for the best flavor.
- Ensure the brown sugar is fully dissolved to avoid a gritty texture.
- Use freshly brewed, strong, dark roast coffee. Avoid instant coffee.
- Lightly whip the cream to a pourable consistency. Do not over-whip.
- Pour the cream gently over the back of a spoon to create a distinct layer.
- Drink immediately after making, as the cream will eventually melt into the coffee.
- Drink responsibly.
