  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Description

This refreshing Indian yogurt drink, Lassi, blends creamy yogurt with spices and sweetness, making it an ideal complement to spicy dishes or a cool snack on warm days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 12 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black salt
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients on the countertop for a smoother process.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the 2 cups of plain yogurt. Whole milk yogurt is recommended for a richer texture.
  3. Using a whisk or hand blender, beat the yogurt until smooth and creamy, eliminating any lumps.
  4. Gradually add 1 cup of cold water to the yogurt, whisking until well combined and pourable. Adjust water for desired consistency.
  5. Sweeten the drink by adding 1-2 tablespoons of sugar or honey, adjusting to taste.
  6. Sprinkle in 1/2 teaspoon of roasted cumin powder for an earthy flavor. If unavailable, roast cumin seeds and grind them.
  7. Add 1/4 teaspoon of black salt for a unique taste. Regular salt can be used as a substitute.
  8. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved and all ingredients are well incorporated. Taste and adjust sweetness or saltiness as needed.
  9. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer to a pitcher and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill.
  10. After chilling, stir the yogurt drink. If too thick, add more cold water to reach desired consistency.
  11. To serve, fill a glass with ice cubes if desired. Pour the chilled yogurt mixture over the ice.
  12. Garnish with fresh mint leaves for a pop of color and refreshing aroma.

Notes

  • For flavor variations, consider adding a pinch of cardamom powder or a few drops of rose water.
  • For a fruitier version, blend in fresh fruits like mango, banana, or berries before chilling.
  • This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled for larger gatherings; just adjust seasoning accordingly.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consume within 2-3 days. Stir before serving as it may separate.
