Description

Enjoy a deliciously cheesy Grilled Cheese Casserole, featuring layers of buttery bread, melted cheddar and mozzarella, and a savory egg mixture. Perfect for any meal, this comforting dish is sure to satisfy the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of bread (your choice: white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika (optional, for a little kick)
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Cut each slice into quarters.
  3. In a large casserole dish, layer half of the bread pieces, buttered side up. Sprinkle half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the bread.
  4. Repeat the layering with the remaining bread and cheese.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs until frothy. Add the milk and whisk until smooth.
  6. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika (if using) until well combined.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the layered bread and cheese, ensuring all pieces are covered. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  8. Let the casserole sit for 10-15 minutes to soak.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling. Optionally, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for a crispy top.
  10. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares or rectangles.
  11. Serve warm, garnished with fresh parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider mixing in cooked bacon or sautéed vegetables.
  • This casserole can be prepared the night before; just cover and refrigerate before baking. Increase baking time if baking from cold.
