Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices of bread (your choice: white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon of paprika (optional, for a little kick)
- Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Cut each slice into quarters.
- In a large casserole dish, layer half of the bread pieces, buttered side up. Sprinkle half of the cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the bread.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining bread and cheese.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs until frothy. Add the milk and whisk until smooth.
- Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika (if using) until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the layered bread and cheese, ensuring all pieces are covered. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
- Let the casserole sit for 10-15 minutes to soak.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling. Optionally, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for a crispy top.
- Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares or rectangles.
- Serve warm, garnished with fresh parsley or chives if desired.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider mixing in cooked bacon or sautéed vegetables.
- This casserole can be prepared the night before; just cover and refrigerate before baking. Increase baking time if baking from cold.
