Scale
- 1 teaspoon high-quality matcha powder
- 2 tablespoons hot water (not boiling)

- 1 tablespoon sweetener (maple syrup, honey, agave, or sugar, adjust to taste)
- 1–2 shots of espresso (about 2–4 ounces)
- Ice cubes
- Optional: Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or extra matcha for garnish
Instructions
- Sift the Matcha: Sift matcha through a fine-mesh sieve into a small bowl or mug.
- Whisk with Hot Water: Add hot (not boiling) water to the sifted matcha.
- Whisk Vigorously: Whisk with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or regular whisk until fully dissolved and frothy. Aim for a smooth, slightly foamy paste.
- Brew the Espresso: Brew 1-2 shots of espresso using your preferred method.
- Set Aside: Let the espresso cool slightly.
- Fill the Glass with Ice: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
- Add Sweetener (Optional): Add sweetener to the glass.
- Pour in the Milk: Pour milk over the ice and sweetener.
- Pour in the Matcha Concentrate: Gently pour the prepared matcha concentrate over the milk.
- Add the Espresso: Slowly pour the espresso over the matcha and milk.
- Stir Gently: Gently stir the latte.
- Add Whipped Cream: If you like whipped cream, add a dollop on top of the latte.
- Sprinkle with Matcha: For an extra matcha boost and a beautiful presentation, sprinkle a pinch of matcha powder over the whipped cream or directly onto the latte.
- Add Chocolate Shavings: Chocolate and matcha are a surprisingly delicious combination. Add some chocolate shavings for a touch of sweetness and elegance.
- Serve Immediately: Enjoy your delicious and refreshing Dirty Matcha Latte immediately!
Notes
- Milk Options: Experiment with different types of milk like oat, almond, soy, or coconut.
- Sweetener Options: Use maple syrup, honey, agave, or sugar. Adjust to taste.
- Espresso Strength: Adjust the amount of espresso to your liking.
- Iced vs. Hot: This recipe is for an iced Dirty Matcha Latte, but you can easily make it hot. Simply heat the milk and matcha concentrate, then add the espresso. Omit the ice.
- Matcha Quality: Use high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha for the best flavor and color.
- Foaming the Milk: For a more luxurious latte, you can foam the milk before adding it to the glass.
- Adding Flavors: Experiment with adding different flavors to your Dirty Matcha Latte. Vanilla extract, almond extract, or even a dash of cinnamon can add a unique twist.
- Making it Vegan: To make this latte vegan, use non-dairy milk and a vegan sweetener like maple syrup or agave.
- Adjusting Sweetness: Taste the latte before adding any additional sweetener. Matcha can sometimes have a slightly bitter taste, so you may need to add more sweetener than you think.
- Layering Technique: For a visually appealing latte, try layering the ingredients carefully. Pour the milk first, then gently pour the matcha concentrate over the milk. Finally, slowly pour the espresso over the matcha. This will create a beautiful layered effect.
- Clumpy Matcha: If your matcha is clumpy, make sure you sift it before whisking it with water. Also, whisk vigorously until all the clumps are dissolved.
- Bitter Matcha: If your matcha tastes bitter, make sure you’re not using boiling water. Also, try using a higher-quality matcha powder.
- Not Sweet Enough: If your latte isn’t sweet enough, add more sweetener to taste.
- Too Strong Coffee Flavor: If the coffee flavor is too strong, use less espresso or add more milk.
