Description

Enjoy a refreshing homemade Brown Sugar Milk Tea, featuring creamy milk and chewy tapioca pearls. This delightful beverage is perfect for warm days or cozy moments at home, offering a sweet and satisfying treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups of water (for tea)
  • 2 tablespoons of black tea leaves (or 2 black tea bags)
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar (for tea)
  • 1 cup of whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1/2 cup of tapioca pearls (boba)
  • Ice cubes (optional)
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil 4 cups of water in a medium-sized pot. Once boiling, add the tapioca pearls and stir gently to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook the pearls according to package instructions (usually 5-10 minutes) until they are translucent and chewy.
  3. Remove from heat and let the pearls sit in the hot water for an additional 5 minutes.
  4. Drain the pearls in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water to stop cooking and remove excess starch.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the cooked tapioca pearls with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Set aside.
  6. In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add black tea leaves or tea bags.
  7. Steep for 5-7 minutes, depending on desired strength. Strain the tea leaves or remove tea bags.
  8. While warm, add 1/2 cup of brown sugar to the tea and stir until dissolved. Optionally, add a pinch of salt.
  9. Let the sweetened tea cool to room temperature, or refrigerate for 15-20 minutes.
  10. In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup of whole milk over medium heat until warm (not boiling). Stir occasionally.
  11. Remove from heat and froth the milk if desired. Optionally, mix in a teaspoon of brown sugar until dissolved.
  12. In a tall glass, add a generous amount of sweetened tapioca pearls.
  13. If desired, fill the glass with ice cubes.
  14. Pour the cooled sweetened tea over the tapioca pearls and ice, filling halfway.
  15. Gently pour the warm milk over the tea for a layered effect.
  16. Stir gently to combine, being careful not to disturb the pearls too much.
  17. Serve immediately with a wide straw.

Notes

  • Use strong black tea like Assam or Ceylon for the best flavor.
  • Modify the amount of brown sugar to your taste; consider other sweeteners like honey or agave syrup.
  • Almond, oat, or coconut milk can be used for a dairy-free option.
  • Add vanilla extract, matcha powder, or cinnamon for unique flavors.
