Blackberry Bourbon Smash: The Ultimate Guide to This Classic Cocktail

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

A refreshing Blackberry Bourbon Smash with muddled blackberries and mint, balanced with lemon juice and simple syrup. Perfect for a summer cocktail!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces bourbon (high-rye recommended)
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • ¾ ounce simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 810 fresh blackberries, plus more for garnish
  • 23 fresh mint sprigs, plus more for garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • Club soda or sparkling water (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Muddle Blackberries and Mint: In a sturdy cocktail shaker, gently combine the blackberries and mint sprigs. Muddle gently for 10-15 seconds, releasing the juices and oils without pulverizing.
  2. Add Bourbon, Lemon Juice, and Simple Syrup: Pour the bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup into the shaker with the muddled mixture.
  3. Shake and Chill: Fill the shaker with ice cubes. Seal and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
  4. Strain and Serve: Prepare a rocks glass with fresh ice. Double strain the drink into the glass.
  5. Top and Garnish: Top with club soda or sparkling water (optional). Garnish with fresh blackberries and a mint sprig.

Notes

  • Bourbon Selection: High-rye bourbons are recommended for their spicy notes, but feel free to experiment with different bourbons.
  • Sweetness Adjustment: Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your preference.
  • Berry Variations: Substitute other berries like raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries.
  • Herb Variations: Experiment with herbs like basil, rosemary, or thyme.
  • Spicy Kick: Add a slice of jalapeño for a spicy twist.
  • Smoked Smash: Use smoked simple syrup or liquid smoke for a smoky flavor.
  • Blackberry Simple Syrup: Elevate the drink with homemade blackberry simple syrup.
  • Mocktail Version: Omit the bourbon and replace it with a non-alcoholic bourbon alternative or more club soda.
  • Simple Syrup: Combine equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan, heat until dissolved, simmer for 1 minute, and cool completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
